The way I have tried to verbalize it to those not living here is that it’s a bit of a cascading nightmare, where every outrage softly fades into the next, all the attacks and barbs aimed at marginalized communities blend together, where the worst voices of a right-wing outrage machine act as the assignment editor for our governor and the professional trolls who inhabit his communications department.

Today is Inauguration Day in Florida where Governor Ron DeSantis, fresh off raising millions of dollars for the ceremony and surrounding events from some of the largest corporate special interests in the state and from high-dollar donors around the country, will be sworn in for a second term.

TALLAHASSEE — Today, the Florida Legislature kicks off this year’s second special session to deal with our state’s collapsing property insurance market.

What a historic week! The U.S. Senate  passed the Respect for Marriage Act, which would enshrine marriage equality in federal law, granting protections to same-sex and interracial couples. This bill still must pass the House, but the bipartisan vote in the Senate is a great step forward.. As made clear when Roe v. Wade was overturned, we must take every precaution to protect people’s fundamental rights.

We’re at a pivotal junction in history. Trumpism – and its agenda of fear and division embodied by Ron DeSantis (in a more polished coating) – threatens our freedoms and representative democracy. It can feel overwhelming at times with so many critical battles needing attention.
