Across the country, teachers are making headlines as they go on strike. But in Florida, where teacher pay languishes well behind the national average thanks to politicians like Gov. Rick Scott, that’s not an option due to a clause in our state constitution that prohibits strikes by public employees.

In the days and weeks following Hurricane Irma, 14 elderly Floridians have died unnecessarily after they were left in the suffocating heat of their nursing home with no power. Several calls for help to Gov. Scott were sent to voicemail, then deleted, and no help was sent.
Instead of being given a helping hand, Florida’s public schools are being dealt a big sucker punch. HB 7069, if signed by Gov. Scott, would devastate public schools, shortchange teachers, and finance a huge giveaway to corporate charter school chains.
“We urge you to coordinate efforts with local health departments and other public health entities in order to effectively promote available resources and coordinate preventive care efforts, as well as earmarking a portion of any federal funds to expand resources for family planning education and services.”
