TALLAHASSEE – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced a special session for next month to restrict the rights of private businesses and local governments that follow public health guidelines when it comes to instituting public health protections.

In response, Progress Florida Executive Director Mark Ferrulo and Florida Watch Executive Director Josh Weierbach issue the following statements:

“While Florida’s small businesses and local governments are doing all they can to keep people safe and allow our economy to rebound, our state’s Governor seems hellbent on continuing this pandemic for as long as possible no matter how many people he gets sick in the process,” said Progress Florida Executive Director Mark Ferrulo. “Today’s announcement is another example by Governor Ron DeSantis of spreading medical disinformation and undermining public health in order to play to the far-right and anti-vaxx fringe.”

“There is no bar too low when it comes to how far Governor Ron DeSantis will stoop to boost his own political ambitions at the expense of the people of Florida,” said Florida Watch Executive Director Josh Weierbach. “This special session is another presidential campaign stunt that will cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars, put our state’s economic recovery at risk, and endanger the lives of millions of Floridians, all so Ron DeSantis can tell primary voters in Iowa about how he was the number one pro-virus Governor during the pandemic.”
