Call your Florida state senator today at 844-899-8866 and ask them to vote no on SB 1238. Tell them big utilities shouldn’t get to charge ratepayers extra for risky, out-of-state fracking operations.
Floridians shouldn’t have to pay higher utility bills so Florida Power and Light (FP&L) can make risky and irresponsible investments in out-of-state fracking operations in places like Oklahoma. Yet that’s exactly what SB 1238 does.

Last year, Florida’s Public Service Commission (PSC) granted FP&L permission to charge customers an extra $500 million to financially speculate in fracking operations outside the state. It was the first public utility in the nation to be allowed to charge its customers, instead of shareholders, to do this.1 The Florida Supreme Court overturned the PSC’s decision, saying only the legislature could authorize a utility like FP&L to charge its customers for such an investment.
FP&L and big utilities are pushing hard to pass SB 1238 and force Floridians to subsidize dirty and dangerous fracking operations in other parts of the country. We must stop them.

Big utilities like FP&L should be using their substantial power and resources to double down on investing in clean and renewable sources of energy like wind and solar. Trying to charge Floridians more in order to continue using increasingly outdated and unnecessary fossil fuels simply makes no sense.
