This is The People’s Response

Today is the first day of Florida’s 2021 legislative session. Gov. DeSantis just delivered his annual State of the State address. That’s why we just premiered “The People’s Response,” a video featuring a diverse group of everyday Floridians and progressive champions in the Legislature who are putting forward a people first agenda for our state.

They discuss a series of critical legislative proposals that, unlike Gov. DeSantis’ priorities, will tackle the state’s economic and health crises head-on and build a Florida for the people, and not just well-connected campaign donors, lobbyists, and special interests.

The group offers practical alternatives to the policies of Gov. DeSantis and his legislative allies across a broad range of issues: unemployment safety net, minimum wage, affordable housing, health care, and the state budget.

Watch the video here. After you watch it, we’re asking you to take two actions:

  1. Fill out the People’s Budget survey at PeoplesBudgetFlorida.org. As Rep. Carlos Guillermo Smith says in the video, “Our state budget is a statement of our values as Floridians.” In crafting this year’s budget, Smith called for an end to unneeded corporate tax breaks; taxpayer giveaways to unaccountable voucher schools; repeal of the destructive and unnecessary multi-billion dollar toll roads to ruin boondoggle; and common sense criminal justice reforms.

  2. The second thing we’d like you to do is to get to know who your legislators are by looking them up at MyFloridaHouse.gov. That way, you can keep an eye on them and let them know when they’re not acting in your interests. Because government only works when it is truly a government of, by and for the people.

Thank you for all you do to lift up the voice of everyday Floridians.

For progress,

Mark and the rest of the Progress Florida team

P.S.: If you’d like to help us promote the “People’s Response” on Twitter, we’ll be using the #PeoplesResponseFL hashtag.
