The satellite experts at SkyTruth.org created this graphic to illustrate what the recent Montara oil spill off Australia’s coast would look like if it happened 80 miles off Florida’s gulf coast.

The fight to protect Florida’s world famous coastline from the threat of oil drilling has moved to the Florida legislature, where Big Oil and their army of lobbyists and public relations consultants are working to lift the current ban on oil drilling in state waters.

The Florida House voted last year to allow oil rigs as close as 3 miles from our coast. The Florida Senate is our best hope in protecting our precious coast and thwarting efforts by Texas oil men to “Rig” Florida’s future.

Sen. Jeff Atwater, the Florida Senate President, has the power to protect our beaches, marine environment, economy, and quality of life from those who wish to sell our coastline to Big Oil. He’s being lobbied heavily by pro-drilling forces so he needs to hear from Floridians like you right now.
